How to Download Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Open Alpha

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, the next installment in the popular FPS franchise, an appearance at yesterday’s PlayStation 5 showcase event, with developer Treyarch showing off new a new trailer for the game’s single-player campaign before announcing that fans will be able to take its multiplayer for a spin on the PS4 this weekend.

PS4 owners will be able to download and play the open alpha for free starting this Friday, September 18 at 10 am PDT, through to Sunday, September 20, 10 am PDT. Preloading unlocks in a few hours today, September 17, at 8 am PDT.

All you need to do is head on over to the PlayStation store at any time past 8 am PDT today, enter Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War into the search bar, then select the open alpha from the results, and hit the download button. Publisher Activision has confirmed that the alpha weighs in at around 25GB, so plan your download accordingly.

Unfortunately for expectant Xbox One and PC players, the developer has yet to announce any plans to make the alpha available on other platforms. In fact, in a post on the official PlayStation blog, publisher Activision, refers to the open alpha offering as “an exclusive Alpha weekend” for the PS4. It is, of course, still possible for other platforms to be given the same treatment at a later time.

If not, fans still have the option to get their hands on the game before release, running October 10-12 as well as October 15-17 on the PS4 and October 17-19 on all platforms. Those who pre-order a digital copy of the game get early access to the beta, running October 8-9 on the PS4 and October 15-16 on PC and Xbox One.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War comes packed with an all-new single-player campaign, new and familiar multiplayer modes, including Treyarch’s signature Zombies co-op experience, and will “support and build on the hit, free-to-play experience Call of Duty: Warzone.” Best of all, it will be both cross-platform and cross-gen.

The final version of the game is slated for a November 13 release to coincide with the release of both the PS5 as well as the new Xbox Series X and Series S consoles, with pre-orders available right now. It will be available on PC (through Battle.net), PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S, PS4, and Xbox One
