How To Record Longer, Unlimited-Length Animoji Videos On iPhone X

Of all the bells and whistles that come with Apple’s tenth-anniversary iPhone, Animoji proved to be an instant hit. Although broadly thought of as nothing more than a gimmick meant to advertise the fidelity of its new face-mapping module, the 3D animated emoji garnered a lot of attention on the day the iPhone X was launched, mostly owing to a musical trend called Animoji Karaoke that took social media by storm.

Like most other Apple offerings, however, the feature comes with little or no customization options and, likely because it is meant for use with iMessage, recordings can only be up to 10 seconds long. You could always record the preview screen using the screen recording feature that was added with iOS 11 and crop out the rest of the screen, or create multiple 10-second clips and combine them, but you’ll need a video editing app for either solution. Wouldn’t it be much easier if you could just create longer Animoji recordings? Fortunately, there’s an app for that.

Developed by hacker Guilherme Rambo, AnimojiStudio is a simple app that lets you record Animoji videos of unlimited length, but that’s not all – the app let’s you set a custom background color for your recordings, live-stream to service’s like Mobcrush and Twitter’s Periscope, and with the microphone disabled, record audio from other apps, such as the stock Music app. For those with premium Spotify subscriptions, there is even a dedicated “Karaoke mode” that lets you search for and lip-sync to songs from the Spotify library, provided you have the app installed.

The app uses the as yet private AvatarKit framework, which is why you won’t find it on the App Store. You will instead have to sideload the app’s IPA file to your iPhone X. Now, that may sound like a daunting task, but we assure you that it is made trivial with the use of the convenient Cydia Impactor tool. To learn how to sideload apps using Cydia Impactor, read our very own guide here: How To Install App IPA Files On iOS Using Cydia Impactor.

Just remember that unless you have a paid Apple Developer account, you will have to reinstall/resign the app every seven days using Cydia Impactor.
