You Can Download GTA 5 for Free on PC Right Now, Here’s How

Every week, the Epic Games Store makes one game free to download, and this time around, that game is none other than Rockstar’s hit open-world gangster simulator, Grand Theft Auto V. This may not seem like that big of a deal to the uninitiated, seeing as how the game is nearly seven years old, but the news attracted enough traffic to Epic’s online storefront to cause an eight-hour long disruption in services.

GTA V continues to enjoy an active player-base today, largely due to its online add-on and a predictably spry modding community. In fact, it is still one of the most popular games on Steam, with its daily player count fluctuating between 100,000 and 200,000 over the past week. If you’ve been on the edge about splashing cash on the game, you’ve got no reason to stay away now.

The free offering is valid until May 21 and will get you the Premium Edition of GTA V, which packs “the complete GTA V story, Grand Theft Auto Online and all existing gameplay upgrades and content,” plus the Criminal Enterprise add-on, which packs additional content and $1,000,000 for GTA Online. All you need is a free Epic Games account with two-factor authentication enabled.

How to Download GTA 5 for Free

Once you’ve signed up or signed in at epicgames.com, simply head on over to the front page of the store, scroll down and select GTA V from under the Free Games section, and hit the Get button on the page that follows. Once again, you will need to have 2FA enabled on your account. To do so, click on your username, select Account, switch to the Password and Security section, then scroll down and select one of the two-factor authentication methods offered.

With that taken care of, clicking Get will add the game to your library, from where you can install it to your PC using the Epic Games Launcher. If you don’t already have the launcher installed, you can download it from epicgames.com by clicking the Get Epic Games button in the top-right corner of the site.
