How To Learn Game Of Thrones’ High Valyrian Right On Your Phone

In the list of top ways to prove one’s devotion to a media franchise, learning a fictional language certainly sits near the top, somewhere between getting a tattoo and naming your child after one of the characters. Problem is, learning a new language is a lot of work, and it’s hard to justify that kind of effort for a fictional language.

That’s where Duolingo comes in. Available on web and mobile platforms, this free app is designed to make learning new languages both easier and, with the help of gamification, much more fun, and yes, it offers courses for fictional languages as well. Game of Thrones fans will be pleased to know that Duolingo recently added support for High Valyrian. You can now learn to speak like an Essosi, or the revered Mother of Dragons, with only a few minutes of practice each day from the comfort of your smartphone.

A week or two of these virtual High Valyrian classes, and you’re all set to become the life of your next Game of Thrones-themed party. We can’t guarantee anything, however, as it all depends on how your friends take to you spending time, little as that may be, learning a fictional language. In short, you should be fine as long as your friends aren’t riñar.

As mentioned earlier, the course can be taken over the web using a desktop browser as well, but unless you’re in front of a computer screen through most of the day, that might not be as convenient as using a smartphone. Duolingo has apps for iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch), Android, and Windows Phone devices. Both the app itself and the courses it offers are completely free.

The addition of High Valyrian to the Duolingo repertoire marks the second time the app has added support for a fictional language, with Klingon from the Star Trek franchise already in its list of offerings.
