Download: There’s A Super Mario Maker Clone For PC In The Making

Super Mario Maker has made quite a name for itself since it was released last year, earning multiple awards, nominations and spots in best-of lists all around the web including our very own compilation of best 2015 games. The game allows players to put their creativity to use, developing their own Super Mario levels via a simple, drag-and-drop interface. These levels can then be shared with other players over the web.

Unfortunately, the game is exclusive to Nintendo’s Wii U at the moment, and seeing as how the Japanese has yet to release a 3DS variant of the game, it is unlikely they’ll be porting it over to other platforms any time soon, if ever. The fact that the game is based on an iconic Nintendo character further lessens the odds of it ever going cross-platform. If you own a Windows PC, however, you might soon be able to get a taste of the real thing with Super Mario ReMaker.

Currently in the works, with a playable demo available for download, this fan-made Super Mario Maker clone looks and works roughly the same way as the original sans the game styles of Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U. Although developer LuNiney doesn’t plan on adding these game styles in future updates, new features and exclusive themes are on the to-do list.

The demo packs a fully functional editor, almost all SMB1 game elements, nine Course themes and more, with additional costumes, themes and the ability to group Courses into Worlds to come in future updates. Check out the video below to see it in action.

Although the game does display the mandatory copyright disclaimer at the beginning, the fact remains that it is using Nintendo-licensed material, which means it could be taken down at any time. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen, or that Nintendo just gives in and creates a PC port for Super Mario Maker.

We’ve linked to the game’s web page below. You’ll find download links for the aforementioned demo at the end of said page. If you come across any issues with the game that haven’t been addressed in the FAQ, be sure to help the developer out with a bug report.
